I think that the punishment should fit the crime. If you are prepared to murder someone then you should die as well. If you are a rapist then you need to be locked up for a very, very long time with other rapists (they might take a liking to you). If someone does something to a child then that is a different story. Those kind of people deserve whatever happens to them. I know that when I worked at the prison a person that committed an offense against a child was not looked to fondly on by the other inmates. Believe it or not some of these inmates have there standards and rapists and child abusers are not at the top of the popularity list. In a perfect world we would not have to deal with this sort of situation but this is not a perfect world so we have to make the punishment harsh enough so that it might deter others from committing that crime. It is like a drunk driver, these people are often given a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again then what happens they go get drunk and get behind the wheel. What good does it do to take their license from them they just go drive anyway. Make it really hurt. Give them some time to think about it and really lay the fine to them. Alot of people take notice when it hurts their pocket book.
If you let a murderer or a rapist out of jail I think that you should be able to keep tabs on them. What is the harm in tagging them someway so that you can keep up with them. What would you rather have, someones rights violated or a dead child that has been raped. There are people out there that take advantage of the system way too much. If people know that there is a way to keep track of them and that they are going to get caught don't you think that they will not committ the crime. I know that it sounds like big brother but how can you trust someone that has already committed one violent crime.
